A Message From Professor Downes

Dear Patient,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to London Gynaecology and the doctors I have carefully selected to continue your care after my retirement. This leaflet provides an introduction to the practice and to the doctors themselves. Over the coming weeks, Emma and Deepa will thoughtfully assess each patient's needs to ensure you are matched with the clinician best suited to continue your care.

Ms Shikha Kapur MBBS MRCOG PG Cert Med Ed
Consultant Gynaecologist

Ms Kapur is a highly accomplished Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician with extensive expertise in early pregnancy and acute gynaecology. She graduated from St George’s University of London in 2007 and is an honourable member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Ms Kapur completed her specialist training in Northeast London and obtained her Consultant qualification at the prestigious Royal Free Hospital in London. She currently serves as the College Tutor and Lead Consultant in Early Pregnancy at Watford hospital, West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Furthering her expertise, Ms Kapur undertook a fellowship in ultrasound scanning at Imperial College London, where she developed advanced skills in performing early pregnancy and 3D gynaecology transvaginal pelvic ultrasound scans. Her clinical expertise encompasses a wide range of conditions, including recurrent miscarriage, ovarian cysts, pelvic infections, fibroids, endometriosis, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). She also provides expert care in contraception, coil insertion and is highly experienced in managing menopause and post-menopausal bleeding.

Renowned for her compassionate, empathetic, and professional approach, Ms Kapur is dedicated to delivering personalised care that prioritises women’s health and well-being.

Mr Hemant Vakharia MBBS, BSc MRCOG
Consultant Gynaecologist and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon

Mr Vakharia brings extensive experience and advanced specialist training, particularly in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. He is also a Consultant at Barnet Hospital, part of the Royal Free NHS Trust, where he previously served as Clinical Director for Women’s Services for five years.

After qualifying from the Royal Free & University College Medical School, Mr Vakharia completed his training in the North Central & East Thames rotation, with additional advanced training in minimal access surgery at Birmingham Women’s Hospital. This has allowed him to develop expertise in managing a wide range of gynaecological conditions through minimally invasive techniques.

Mr Vakharia regularly provides care for patients with conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, adenomyosis, heavy menstrual bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). He also supports those with pelvic pain, period pain, fertility concerns, and general gynaecological issues.

Ms Sangeeta Khinder MBBS MRCOG
Consultant Gynaecologist

Ms Sangeeta Khinder is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. At her NHS trust, Ms Khinder is lead for Gynaecology Oncology and Deputy Lead for Colposcopy. Her roles also include Lead for Women’s Health and Maternity Services Clinical Guidelines Committee (MCGC).

Ms Khinder has vast expertise in the following gynaecology areas: minimal access surgery, management of ovarian cysts, fibroids, pelvic pain, heavy periods, abnormal bleeding after the menopause, outpatient hysteroscopy, colposcopy and abnormal smears along with scanning for both early pregnancy and gynaecology.

Ms Khinder is passionate about patient safety and experience and is an advocate for women’s choice.
